Zum 5-3 Samba
A talented Samba squad kicked off the Holy Month laden with new signings and old returnees Sunday night on Roosevelt Island, and provided the vintage KidSuper experience— complete with game time arrivals, beautiful attacking football, and little to no defensive focus.
Four Samba starters arrived at the field at kickoff time and delayed the start of the match by almost ten minutes, walking onto the pitch with no warmup in classic fashion. It cost the team dearly, allowing an immediate Zum Schneider goal. Samba’s ability began to ascend as the half went on, but ultimately there were too many sloppy, undisciplined moments and the group had already put itself in a hole against a quality opponent, which would go on to be the theme of the evening. KidSuper pressure forced Schneider into an own goal, but then a Zum corner was completely whiffed on at the near post by a Samba defender, and subsequently turned home by one of the host players. Young Samba star Mohamet Ndiaye appeared to be bodychecked in the box by a Zum defender towards the end of the half, but a penalty call never materialized from the center referee and Samba went into the half down 2-1.
Faced with the task of overcoming the 2-1 deficit in the final forty five, Samba made a risky halftime formational adjustment. The change was immediately regrettable as Zum scored right away to take a 3-1 lead. However, the formation did open up the KidSuper attack and Joseph Koroma scored a candidate for goal of the season off of a feed from Dylan Cope. Unfortunately, the unfocused Samba back four gave a goal right back to the hosts. Koroma again made a goal from nothing, ripping the ball from a Schneider defender before it was tucked home by Amara Sesay, but unbelievably the KidSuper defenders again immediately capitulated and allowed a fifth Zum goal.
